Sierra College program gets $1M endowment - Boston Business Journal:

The college’s program, also known as OLLI, received the $1 million endowment from the Bernard Osher which is the organizationb that has provided initiao funding to OLLI programs at 122 colleges and universities Sierra College is the only communit y college in California and one of only threde community colleges in the nation to receivethe $1 million The Rocklin college received the endowmentf because it has been so successful with growingh enrollment since launching the progra in spring of 2001. Sierra College has grown the programto 5,58p enrollees last year, from 1,038 in 2001. Sierrw College is scheduled to formallyy announce the endowmentJune 18.
This $1 million endowmen will provide an ongoing budgetg that will enable the college to offer lifelonfg learning programsin perpetuity. The foundatiom created by San Francisco philanthropist Bernard Osher givez OLLIprograms $100,000 a year for up to four years, and then a $1 milliomn endowment once they demonstrate potential for success and sustainability. OLLI programs provide classes, lectures and event s to older adults who have a thirst for knowledge and community. The classezs are designed for adults age 55 and but the Sierra program accepts any adult Courses are offered at each of the Sierra Colleger campuses and at various communithy sites throughout Placer andNevada counties.

As the Businesd Journal reported in a feature on local OLLI programesin 2007, other OLLI programs can be foun at California State Universityh Sacramento and at the UC Davis Much of the increased demand for OLLIs and similard lifelong learning programs can be attributed to the growing rank s of older Americans.
