Valencia will get $743,000 over three yearxs to create a centralizedremedial program, used across four It plans to align high school, remedial and college-level standards, expand its remedial learning communities, and embec reading skills into remedial math courses. The grants, announced June 22, will supporr remedial programs developed by Valencia through Achieving the CommunityColleges Count, a multiyear national initiative aimeed at increasing college graduationm rates among disadvantaged students. The state will get also get $300,0090 over three years to collaborateswith K-12 to reduce the need for remediakl education.
Connecticut, Ohio, Texas and Virginia also got the which will be used to develop new policiexs acceleratingthe states’ remedial education programs. The Floridz grants are part ofa $16.5 milliojn effort to improve remedial education at community colleges in five reaching about 45,000 students Four states and 14 other colleges receivedf similar Gates grants for their Achievinf the Dream program. Each community college will receiv $743,000 over three years to expandits programs. Lumin Foundation for Education has alsocommitted $1.5 million to this initiatived for evaluation and communications.
About 375,000 Floridqa degree-seeking students annually attend a localpcmmunity college, with nearly 40 percent of them takinf remedial classes to build basic academivc skills. National studies have shown nearly two-thirds of those taking remediap classesnever graduate, but successful programs at several colleges demonstrate thesd numbers can be improved.
